ICMR Opens Recruitment for Director of NIRTH, Jabalpur

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) , an Autonomous Organization under the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India , has issued a recruitment notice for the post of Director, National Institute for Research in Tribal Health (NIRTH), Jabalpur. ICMR, which deals with biomedical/health research in various areas in collaboration with national/international agencies , invites online applications from Indian Citizens.

The position is for appointment on a regular basis under Direct Recruitment or Deputation , with all-India transfer liability under the Council. The last date for the receipt of applications is November 3, 2025, till 5:30 PM.

Eligibility and Experience Requirements

The essential qualifications and experience are distinct for Direct Recruitment and Deputation. The maximum age limit for Direct Recruitment is Not exceeding 58 years.

I. Direct Recruitment

A. Essential Qualification

Candidates must possess one of the following:

  • MD/MS or an equivalent degree recognized by MCI/NMC.
  • MBBS or an equivalent degree recognized by MCI/NMC with an MPH from a recognised University.
  • Master’s Degree in a subject related to Biomedical sciences OR MBBS or equivalent degree, recognized by MCI/NMC, with a Ph.D. from a recognised University in a subject related to Biomedical sciences.

B. Essential Experience

A total of 15 years of experience is required, which must include:

  • 05 Years in a managerial position and having handled R&D projects independently (viz. PI or Co-PI of Scientific studies, Head of Research Groups/Centres/Institutes/Laboratories). AND
  • 02 Years regular service in the pay matrix level-13-A or 07 Years regular service in the pay matrix level-13, or equivalent as amended from time to time.

Experience Calculation Notes:

  • Ph.D. will be considered as 4 years’ experience (irrespective of the duration taken to complete the degree).
  • MD/MS or equivalent to be considered as 3 years’ experience.*
  • MVSc will be considered as 2 years’ experience.*
  • MPH/M.Tech/ME will not be considered as any experience.
  • Experience in Research & Development related to Biomedical Sciences in Govt./Public sector/Private Institutions will be admissible.
  • The period spent on obtaining the minimum essential educational qualification shall not count towards experience.

II. Deputation (Including Short Term Contract) / Absorption

This avenue is open to Scientists from the Central Government, State Government, or recognized autonomous organisations, Research Institutes, or Universities. They must meet one of these conditions:

  • Holding an analogous post on a regular basis. OR
  • Possessing the same essential qualifications and experience prescribed for direct recruits.

Deputation Notes:

  • The tenure of deputation shall be 5 years, extendable maximum by 5 years, only if the incumbent is absorbed in ICMR.
  • The maximum age limit for appointment by deputation shall not exceed 58 years as on the last date of applications.
  • ICMR Scientists shall not be eligible for appointment on deputation; they must apply under Direct Recruitment.

  2. If the number of such shortlisted candidates is high, ICMR will further shortlist the candidates based on suitable shortlisting criteria fixed by the Competent Authority.
  3. ICMR generally prefers to call candidates with higher experience in the relevant fields or candidates with higher educational qualification, as decided by the Appointing Authority.
