The NEET PG 2025 exam, initially scheduled for June 15, has been postponed following a Supreme Court directive requiring it to be conducted in a single shift to ensure fairness and consistency for all candidates. The Court criticized the previously planned two-shift format, citing potential disparities in difficulty levels and lack of transparency.

In response, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) must now arrange significantly more test centers and infrastructure, delaying the release of a new exam date. This last-minute change has disrupted the plans of over two lakh aspirants, causing widespread stress and concern, with student groups demanding accountability and clarity from NBEMS. Candidates are urged to stay updated via the official NBEMS website.

NEET PG 2025 Postponed: Supreme Court Orders Single Shift, New Exam Date Awaited

New Delhi, [June 3, 2025]: In a significant development, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2025, originally scheduled for June 15, 2025, has been postponed by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). This decision comes directly after a directive from the Supreme Court of India, which mandated that the examination be conducted in a single shift to ensure fairness and transparency across all candidates.

The postponement has left over 2 lakh NEET PG aspirants in a state of uncertainty, as the NBEMS has yet to announce a new examination date. Candidates are advised to regularly check the official NBEMS website for updates.

The Supreme Court’s Mandate: Ensuring Fairness

The primary reason for the postponement is the Supreme Court’s order, issued on May 30, 2025. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Kumar, and NK Anjaria, heard a petition challenging the NBEMS’s earlier plan to conduct NEET PG 2025 in two shifts. The petitioners argued that a multi-session exam format could lead to varying difficulty levels between shifts, thereby compromising fairness and consistency in the assessment process.

The Supreme Court strongly asserted that holding examinations in two shifts creates “arbitrariness” and does not place all candidates on the same level. The court questioned why NEET PG, a crucial national-level exam, could not be held in a single shift, especially when NEET UG, with a much larger candidate pool, is successfully conducted in one go. While NBEMS had previously cited “normalisation” processes to address difficulty disparities, the court observed that such methods could not guarantee absolute fairness, and past instances had led to concerns about biased results.

Logistical Challenges and NBEMS’s Response

The shift to a single-shift format presents significant logistical challenges for NBEMS. To accommodate all candidates simultaneously, the examination body is tasked with arranging a substantially larger number of test centres nationwide. Estimates suggest the need for approximately 900 additional test centres, along with enhanced security measures, including signal jammers and advanced surveillance systems.

In its official notice, NBEMS stated, “NEET-PG 2025 scheduled to be held on 15.06.2025 has been postponed to arrange for more Test Centres and required infrastructure.” The board has assured candidates that fresh exam dates will be announced shortly, emphasizing its commitment to upholding the integrity and transparency of the examination process.

Implications for Aspirants

The sudden postponement, just 12 days before the original exam date, has caused considerable stress and disruption for lakhs of medical graduates. Many candidates have invested significant time, effort, and financial resources into their preparation and travel plans. Student organizations, such as the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), have expressed concerns over NBEMS’s preparedness and demanded urgent action, accountability, and even compensation for affected students. There are also fears that the change in format might lead to changes in allotted test cities, further complicating logistics for candidates.

Previous Dates and Upcoming Announcements

Prior to the postponement, the NEET PG 2025 application process ran from April 17, 2025, to May 7, 2025. The original exam date was June 15, 2025, with results tentatively expected by July 15, 2025. The internship completion deadline for eligibility remains July 31, 2025.

Candidates are strongly advised to refer only to the official NBEMS website (natboard.edu.in) for the revised exam schedule, admit card release dates, and any other pertinent information. The examination board aims to minimize uncertainty and provide ample time for candidates to adjust to the revised schedule. While waiting for the new dates, aspirants are encouraged to continue their diligent preparation.
